on exponential growth in technology

i read once that it's hard to comprehend exponential growth in technology because we are too close to the ground. kind of like an ant climbing a hill. our delta x is small so the curve seems linear so we can't help extrapolating linearly when we imagine the future. i think a x86 processor emulated in javascript is a glimpse towards the summit of the hill. except it's not a summit. it's more like a wall in the distance stretching up until it's lost in the clouds. i'm picturing the ring world in halo one for some reason... except it would not be a circle obviously... and some ants.

Jane's Addiction at Google

http://youtu.be/qHZGdfZ-mZo is Jane's Addiction live at Google conf.
Seriously amazing. I'm watching this over and over. Jane's Addiction
are incredible. The crowd are IT nerds. Awkwardness happens. The bass
tone alone is just mind blowing. If you are into music watch this. 45
minutes.

The considerable songwriting talent of Stephin Merritt, Part 2: The Book of Love

okay, so, maybe the scrubs finale was on the telly last night. but i didn't know this song last time i saw it... so... here is peter gabriel singing a magnetic fields song. (side note: i had 'So' at an impressionable age. it was on high rotation. pretty good album). anyway, back to magnetic fields. stephin merritt. damn.

here is the original version: (it's track 12 on '69 love songs')

(some more magnetic fields songs i particularly like).

that guy can write a song. here is the peter gabriel version from the scrubs finale, if you're into that kind of thing (and for some reason i think there's a reasonable chance you are...):

afternoon sunlight

Guzman? Again? Why not?

I could probably be mayor of that place (if I was into that type of thing...)

obama's on a roll

i loled. his delivery is pretty good... (via CH)

also...

jokes aside his osama speech made me cringe slightly. i got a hint of 'team america'. but just a little. i had to wonder what bush's version of the speech might have sounded like. or mccain's.

julia's speech (as always) had me changing channels as quick as i could. her oration is unbearable. or is it just me?

chanel cole?

we all know what happened to lisa mitchell but whatever happened to chanel cole? (singing starts at 0:40)

update: obviously the answer can be found by googling. i will sum up... mostly not a lot. here she is in a band called 'spook' in 2005.

(here's some lisa mitchell just because why not...)
